What happens when hundreds of young professionals worldwide put all of their expertise, energy and network in to action to work on smart ideas – 1%PROJECTS – that will make a difference?

The 1%EVENT is the event that connects smart ideas with people, knowledge and network from around the world. It’s the event where our community meets, connects and shares. In 2009 we 1%EVENT was organized for the first time. In 2010, it was organized in both Amsterdam and Naroibi. In 2011, 1%EVENT took place in 7 cities around the world.

What are we going to do in 2012? This year the 1%EVENT consists of two parts: the Global Co-Creation and the 1%FACTORY.

The Global Co-Creation
Groups of young professionals in 9 cities around the world work on challenges and questions from our project owners. The concept is simple. Every participating team proposes a case and works on a case. In the Netherlands, we have 5 pre-selected teams ready to put it their all. Are you interested to join the Co-Creation?

1%FACTORY
At the 1%FACTORY we ask everyone, on- and offline, to join forces to share 1% of their knowledge and expertise to solve concrete challenges that our 1%PROJECT owners face. Do you want to join the 1%FACTORY?

Sudanese Knowledge Society – Khartoum

What happens when hundreds of young professionals worldwide put all of their expertise, energy and network in to action to work on smart ideas – 1%PROJECTS – that will make a difference?

On Thursday at 4 pm, we kick off the co-creation in 7 cities around the world. Groups of young professionals worldwide works on challenges and questions from change makers. A team of the Sudanese Knowledge Society in Sudan is ready to rumble! They propose a case and work on a case.

This page gives a brief background on how the Sudan group at the 1%CLUB came about, its motivations and hopes.

The Beginning

It was at the Closure and Evaluation Session of the Workshop on Knowledge Management Capacity for Africa that was held in January 2012, in Khartoum (Sudan) when Ihab Shoully (CTO of Orange Engineering which was a sponsor in-kind of the workshop) offered to continue his support for the workshop community by delivering a course on Web Applications to those interested. His offer came as a response to the workshop evaluation report that valued sponsorships in kind, noting in particular the ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructural Library) course that was delivered at the workshop by the Sudanese Centre for Engineering and Environment Studies who then donated the course registration fees for workshop organisation activities.

After the Closure Event, in February 2012, the Workshop Chair (Gada Kadoda) met with a small group from the workshop community who expressed interest in Ihab’s offer, and shared with them some ideas on forming a software development team that can work together to develop their own capabilities and at the same time volunteer their skills to assist community development groups and projects. The small group which comprised Fatin Azhari, Eram Oshari and Israa Elamin, liked the idea and embarked on building the team for which Ihab’s course is a start, hopefully of many such courses as well as a team bonding activities.

Joining the 1%CLUB 

When I first shared our ideas with Ihab, he asked whether I had heard of the 1%CLUB . I hadn’t so he forwarded me the link to the 1%CLUB  website, and what serendipity! The 1% community and mode of work are exactly what we needed!!

I started communicating in April 2012 with Nadia van Emmerik from 1%CLUB  Netherlands who explained the ways by which individuals or groups can join the 1%CLUB. We chose to join as a team to allow us the better of two worlds and realise much more than we initially set out for.  That is, in addition to working towards developing innovative solutions for local problems, we get to collaborate and problem-solve with others elsewhere and have them help us with ours. I will elaborate further on gains the 1%CLUB model has to offer individuals in the Sudan group, but before that I want to conclude this narrative about our group’s formation by describing key activities and events during the period from May and July, leading to our participation at the 1%EVENT in September.

The main activities were led by the small group, joined by Nada Mahmoud who had the advantage of being on campus with access to our target population – students! The group coordinated course logistics and formed the team listed below which represent the current and founding members the 1%CLUB in Sudan.

An important event during the same period, which was the culmination of another set of efforts related to the Knowledge Management Workshop and the community that developed around it, was the establishment of the Sudanese Knowledge Society (SKS) in June. The group in the photo are members including six founding members of SKS, which is registered as a Cultural Association at the Ministry of Culture.

We intend, as the Sudan 1%Club to serve the mission of SKS by drawing on the strengths of being part of a global community who have similar values and aspirations. As SKS members, we hope to contribute to realising a knowledge society in Sudan. We believe with others, that the concept of “Knowledge Society”, which has human development at its core, is a key enabler for sustainable development and the empowerment of people. While the platform of the 1%Club, that aims to “connect smart development projects with people, knowledge and money” worldwide, can enable us as the Sudan group to realise our projects and take us from knowledge capture and sharing to its generation and application, it will also add value to the individuals who engage as global 1%Members.

This value is, in my view, twofold. First, the 1%CLUB model encourages multidisciplinary engagement and contextual relevance in problem solving – skills that are important for tackling development challenges but are not fostered through traditional university education. Second, a model whose philosophy is built around global collaboration and the tenet that everyone can do something will not only enrich one‘s knowledge of and communication with other cultures and people, we will also learn skills as global citizens to be able to tackle global problems of climate change, poverty and other concerns.

Our Future Outlook

We have a selection of cases that we hope to work on at the 1%EVENT and beyond. We are also very much looking forward to learn about and contribute to cases from participating groups from other countries.

Mastering the approach of the 1%CLUB of co-creation and spreading the word locally are at the top of our agenda. We hope to build the capabilities of our membership through organising training courses, liaising with relevant groups, and attracting members from different levels and domains of expertise.

How would we look in a year’s time? Maybe a network of 1%CLUBs in different universities and regions in Sudan, maybe a number of innovative solutions up our sleeve, but certainly we will look different as individuals – we might be more thinking out-of-the-box and sharing what-we-have.
